<h2 id="how-it-works">How It Works</h2>

<p>Your home water pressure (typically 40&#x2013;80 PSI) is far too high for Blumat sensors. A <strong>pressure reducer</strong> steps it down to the safe operating range (1&#x2013;15 PSI) before water reaches your sensors. From there, the system works exactly like any other Blumat setup &#x2014; sensors respond to soil drying, open, water flows, soil rehydrates, sensors close.</p>

Commercial Cultivation: Large Scale Blumat Systems

<h2 id="pressure-is-everything">Pressure Is Everything</h2>

<p>Blumat sensors rely on water pressure to function. Without it, the valve cannot open and no water flows. With too much, fittings can blow apart and tubing may pop off &#x2014; leading to flooding or damage.</p>

<p><strong>Safe operating range: 1 to 15 PSI.</strong></p>

<p>There are three ways to deliver water within this range. Which one is right for you depends on your setup size, available water source, and distribution method.</p>

<h2 id="option-1-gravity-fed-reservoir">Option 1: Gravity-Fed Reservoir</h2>

<p>The simplest and most common approach. Pressure is created by raising a water reservoir above your plants &#x2014; no pump or external pressure source needed.</p>

<p>Gravity systems are ideal for basic Blumat drippers, BluSoak 2.0 drip tape, and smaller container setups. They&apos;re quiet, simple, and require no electricity.</p>

<p><strong>Important:</strong> Gravity systems are sensitive to air bubbles. If your reservoir runs dry and air enters the tubing, flow can stop entirely. Always install flush valves or ball valves at the end of your supply lines so you can purge air when refilling.</p>

<h2 id="option-2-pressure-reducing-fittings">Option 2: Pressure Reducing Fittings</h2>

<p>When connecting to a pressurized source &#x2014; hose bib, municipal line, or pump &#x2014; you <strong>must</strong> use a pressure reducer. Standard household water pressure (40&#x2013;80 PSI) will destroy Blumat fittings and tubing without one.</p>

<h2 id="two-categories-of-problems">Two Categories of Problems</h2>

<p>Almost every Blumat issue falls into one of two categories: the system is watering too much, or it&apos;s not watering enough. Start by identifying which one you&apos;re dealing with, then follow the steps below.</p>

<h2 id="overwatering--soil-staying-too-wet">Overwatering &#x2014; Soil Staying Too Wet</h2>

<p>If a container or bed is staying too wet, or the sensor seems to be constantly running:</p>

<h3 id="step-1-check-if-the-sensor-is-actually-running">Step 1: Check if the sensor is actually running</h3>
<p>Remove the 3mm line from the distribution end. Observe whether water is flowing directly from the sensor. If it is, continue to Step 2.</p>

<h3 id="step-2-check-for-leaks-in-distribution">Step 2: Check for leaks in distribution</h3>
<ul>
  <li>Visually inspect BluSoak drip tape and all fittings</li>
  <li>Look for obvious wet spots or spreading moisture patterns</li>
  <li>If a BluSoak fitting is leaking: hand-tighten, then use channel locks to give an extra &#xBC; turn</li>
  <li>If the tape itself is leaking: cut out the damaged section and reconnect with a BluSoak tape coupler</li>
</ul>

<h3 id="step-3-verify-soil-moisture">Step 3: Verify soil moisture</h3>
<p>Use a Digital Moisture Meter to check the moisture level near the sensor at the same depth. If the reading is <strong>below 50 mbar</strong> and the sensor is still actively watering, the sensor needs recalibration.</p>

<p>Check that the reservoir, bucket, or hose bib is turned on and has water. This is the most common cause of underwatering.</p>

  <li>Tilt it side to side while looking through the green plastic top</li>

<h3 id="system-stopped-after-reservoir-ran-dry">System stopped after reservoir ran dry</h3>
<p>Air has entered the supply line. Refill the reservoir, open all flush valves at the end of your trunk lines, and let water run until no more air is visible. Close valves once flow is steady.</p>

<h3 id="blusoak-fittings-leaking">BluSoak fittings leaking</h3>
<p>Hand-tight is never tight enough for BluSoak. Use pliers or channel locks to add a firm extra quarter-turn to every fitting. This is the most common installation mistake.</p>

<h3 id="uneven-watering-across-multiple-sensors">Uneven watering across multiple sensors</h3>
<p>Usually a pressure or flow issue. Check that your trunk line is properly sized for the number of zones, that all flush valves are closed during operation, and that no single zone line is significantly longer than others. Use a Digital Moisture Meter to compare tension levels across zones.</p>

<h3 id="sensor-was-set-correctly-but-soil-moisture-has-drifted">Sensor was set correctly but soil moisture has drifted</h3>
<p>Environmental changes &#x2014; temperature swings, growth stage changes, pot size &#x2014; can shift how quickly the plant draws water. Re-check using a Digital Moisture Meter and make small adjustments (1/16&quot; at a time) until the system stabilizes at your target range.</p>

Troubleshooting Your Blumat System

Advanced tips for transplanting, top-dressing, drenching, feeding through the system, harvest care, and winterizing your Blumat setup.

<h2 id="transplanting">Transplanting</h2>

<p>The ideal time to install your Blumat system is <strong>at the time of transplant</strong>, into pre-moistened soil. However, newly transplanted plants may not immediately activate the sensor &#x2014; especially if the root ball is small relative to the container, or if the plant is root-bound and not wicking water into the surrounding medium.</p>

<p><strong>What to do:</strong></p>
<ul>
  <li>After transplanting, spot-water the root ball with <strong>200&#x2013;500 mL of water</strong> (depending on container size) to prevent transplant shock</li>
  <li>Monitor closely for the first few days &#x2014; you may need to hand-water again if the soil surrounding the root ball stays dry</li>
  <li>Once roots grow into the surrounding medium, the system will take over naturally</li>
</ul>

<h2 id="top-dressing-amendments">Top-Dressing Amendments</h2>

<p>You can top-dress amendments without removing your Blumat sensors:</p>
<ul>
  <li>Broadcast dry amendments over the soil surface</li>
  <li>Gently scratch them in using your hands or a rake</li>
</ul>

<p>If you prefer to incorporate amendments more deeply, remove sensors and distribution temporarily, mix amendments into the soil, then reinstall and recalibrate.</p>

<p><strong>Pro tip:</strong> After applying amendments, water them in with a pressurized sprayer or watering wand to drive nutrients slightly into the surface and prevent them from sitting dry on top. This helps reduce clumping and runoff before the Blumat system takes over.</p>

<h2 id="drenching">Drenching</h2>

<p>Drenches can be applied with the Blumat system in place, but use a <strong>smaller total water volume</strong> than the system would normally deliver in a day. This ensures the soil moisture level drops enough that the Blumat cycles back on and continues to distribute the input.</p>

<p>Think of a drench as a liquid broadcast &#x2014; apply evenly across the soil surface using concentrated inputs where possible to minimize volume. The Blumat system will then redistribute moisture and help push the input deeper into the root zone.</p>

<h2 id="feeding-through-the-system">Feeding Through the System</h2>

<p>Blumat systems can be used to deliver liquid nutrients, but this requires care and regular maintenance.</p>

<ul>
  <li><strong>Tank hygiene is critical</strong> &#x2014; if you see biofilm or residue in the reservoir, it likely exists throughout the entire system</li>
  <li>Clean reservoirs regularly using hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, or diluted bleach</li>
  <li>Before pressurizing after cleaning, open a flush valve at the end of your supply line to allow dislodged debris to exit rather than clog sensors</li>
  <li>Only use clean, fully soluble nutrient inputs with no biological or particulate components &#x2014; compost teas, microbial inoculants, and living cultures should not be run through the system</li>
  <li><strong>Feeding through BluSoak drip tape is not recommended</strong> &#x2014; it tends to promote algae growth in lines, especially at lower pressures</li>

<p>At harvest, you can either remove sensors and distribution or leave them in place while containers are fallow.</p>
