Vacation Watering: Keeping Plants Alive While You're AwayUpdated 2 months ago

Keeping Your Plants Watered While You're Away

Whether you're gone for a weekend or a few weeks, Blumat has options for every situation. The right choice depends on how long you'll be away, what type of plants you have, and whether they're indoors or outside.

For Houseplants — Blumat Classics

The simplest and most reliable vacation solution for indoor plants is the Blumat Classic — a ceramic stake connected by a thin tube to a water container. The stake siphons water into the soil automatically as it dries. No power, no timers, no setup complexity.

How to set up for vacation:

  1. Soak the ceramic cone and top cap in water for 15 minutes before installing
  2. Push the cone fully into the soil
  3. Place the supply tube in a full water container — the water surface should be at or below the green cap on the stake
  4. Raise the container slightly for thirstier plants, lower it for plants that prefer drier conditions

How long will it last? Depending on plant type, size, and season, a single plant uses roughly ¼ to 1 liter of water per week. Size your container accordingly. The Vacation Kit covers up to 10 plants for 10–20 days from a single reservoir.

Important: The Classic can only draw water up to 12 inches below the stake. Keep the container close to the plant and make sure the water level stays within that range.

For Multiple Houseplants — Vacation Kit

The Blumat Classic Vacation Kit connects multiple Classic stakes to a single reservoir via an 8mm main supply line and bulkhead fitting. One kit handles up to 10 plants. It's expandable — add more stakes to the line or add a second kit with another bulkhead for more plants.

For Outdoor Containers & Garden Beds — Backyard Starter Kit

The Blumat Classic Backyard Starter Kit is designed for outdoor container gardens. It runs entirely on gravity from a raised reservoir — no electricity, no pressure. Ideal for patios, balconies, and gardens without easy access to a water line. Also works well with rainwater collection systems.

For Grow Tents & Larger Systems

If you have an existing Blumat Tropf system (grow tent, raised bed, commercial setup), it already handles vacation watering automatically — that's the system's core function. The main thing to check before leaving:

  • Reservoir is full and large enough for the duration
  • All flush valves are closed
  • No air bubbles are present in the supply line
  • Sensors are calibrated and running correctly before you leave

Tips for All Vacation Setups

  • Do a test run of 24–48 hours before you leave — confirm the system is actually running and the reservoir level is dropping at the expected rate
  • For longer absences, use a larger reservoir or have someone check in once
  • Move plants away from direct sunlight to reduce water demand while you're gone
  • For Classics: if the system stopped while you were away (reservoir ran dry), simply refill and the system will prime itself automatically
