Blumat Classic vs. Blumat Tropf — What's the Difference?
Sustainable Village carries two distinct Blumat product families. The Tropf sensors (covered in our main setup guides) are for connected irrigation systems — grow tents, raised beds, commercial grows — and require a water source, supply line, and pressure between 1–15 PSI.
Blumat Classics are a completely different product. They are self-contained, gravity-siphon watering stakes designed for individual pots and houseplants. No supply line, no pressure reducer, no pump needed — just the stake and a water container placed nearby. They've been around since 1971 and are the original Blumat product.
How Classics Work
A porous ceramic cone is pushed into the soil and connected via a thin 3mm tube to a nearby water container. As the soil dries, the ceramic cone draws water from the container through capillary siphon action — not pressure. Once the soil is moist again, flow stops automatically. No electricity, no timers, no programming.
Flow rate is controlled simply by raising or lowering the water container relative to the stake:
- Raise the container → more flow
- Lower the container → less flow
- Maximum draw height: 12 inches — if the water surface is more than 12 inches below the stake, flow will stop
Setting Up a Classic Sensor
- Fill a bowl with water and soak both the ceramic cone and the top cap for at least 15 minutes
- While submerged, knock out any air bubbles and press the top on tightly
- Push the ceramic cone fully into the soil
- Place the supply tube into a full water container — the hose should reach the bottom
- Keep the water level at or below the green cap on the stake
No need to soak before installation every time — only if the ceramic dried out completely. If air enters the lines after a dry-out, simply refill the water container and the system will prime itself.
Which Classic Is Right for the Plant?
Standard Classic: Original size. Best for most houseplants. One Classic per pot for small to medium plants; two or three for larger plants.
Classic XL: Delivers about 50% more water than the standard. Best for tropical plants and larger pots with higher water demand.
Classic with Adapters: Standard Classics with 3mm line couplings included. Allows shortening lines for a neater setup, extending lines up to 3 feet for plants further from the water source, or repairing accidentally cut lines.
Inline Classic: Features an integrated tee fitting for running a single 8mm supply line behind a row of plants — ideal for 10+ plants from one line. Keeps the setup clean and low-profile.
Pagoda Classic: Same functionality as the standard Classic with a decorative pagoda-style top. Easier to find among foliage and a popular gift option.
Vacation Kits
The Classic Vacation Kit is a complete ready-to-run system with multiple Classics connected to a single reservoir via an 8mm main line and bulkhead fitting. One kit can water up to 10 plants for 10–20 days unattended depending on plant size and conditions. Kits are expandable — add more Classics to the main line or add a second kit with a second bulkhead to scale up.
The Backyard Starter Kit is a larger version designed for outdoor container gardens and raised beds. It runs entirely on gravity — no electricity, no pressure, no timer. Ideal for rainwater collection systems or gardens far from water lines.
Annual Maintenance
Once a year: place the supply tube in hot water to flush it. Clean the inside of the ceramic cone with a brush and scrub the outside with sandpaper or a pot scrubber pad. This keeps the ceramic porous and responsive.
Bottle Adapters
Bottle adapters are a simplified, no-setup version of the Classic concept — the ceramic stake screws directly onto a standard plastic bottle which acts as the water reservoir. No hose, no container needed. Best for single plants or short absences. The Easy Bottle Adapter XL holds more water and is better suited for thirstier plants.
